Clergy Resources for the Church of France

Heard the Calling?
~~l~~

The Calling is a personal and spiritual experience felt by some at one point or another in their lives. It is not something specific to each person, rather it is unique for everyone. You may feel a desire to serve the Lord in a more personal and on going way than before, a need to become closer to the Son and Angels. For some it is simply having the greatest joy imaginable felt when they think of performing in mass or helping another become closer to the Lord, but as stated before it is a personal experience and feeling and should not be questioned by anyone. There are however, some reasons that are not quite vaild for joining the church, such as being a jilted lover, recently divorced etc... Those reasons do cause pain to the soul but are not necessarily a reason to run out and join the church. If you have heard the calling then seek any member of the clergy for further details.

Confirmation
~~l~~

Confirmation is the act of Ordaining a worshipper into the clergy of Paris. It is performed by the Priest-Rector of a church or a clergy member whose rank is ArchDeacon or above. The person must first be a worshipper to be confirmed, and no longer can they be in a regiment. As they are devoting their life to the Lord it is fitting to leave bloodshed in the past, embracing life and promoting peace. Marriage is no longer possible as they are taking the holy sacrament of Holy Orders instead of Holy Matrimony, marrying themselves to the Lord rather than another individual. Leaving the Clergy entails excommunication. Please seek out a member of the church for further information on what life is like in the clergy.

Ranks, Duties & Advancement
~~l~~

~THE LOWER CLERGY~

Promotions within the clergy are no longer based on Piety Points and Submissions ALONE. Other aspects are now taken into consideration equally. Consideration for Promotion is outlined under each Rank. Once you feel you have met the criteria for promotion seek out your Rector and inform them, they will then seek approval from the Cardinal College. More promotion information listed after Priest.

PORTER - The entry-level position within the church, your primary duty is to become familiar with the church of Paris. There are maps of the churches available for your ease in learning your way around. Sit in on masses to learn and see how they function, and ask questions, the best way to learn is to ask for answers. You will be paired with a higher-level clergy to conduct a bit of initial training. You will be given your Vestments at this rank and they are to be worn at all official church occasions such as Mass or Baptisms. Advancement to Lector will be considered when you submit one Original prayer, have a social level of 10, earned 150 Piety Points, have 100k Experience Points, and hold the Noble title of Marquis.

LECTOR - By now you are familiar with the way things run within the Church of France and hopefully you have a working knowledge of the layout of the churches themselves. Lectors are encouraged though not required to read prayers during mass, your main duty will be to assist worshippers as they enter the church. Kindly remind them to turn off triggers, and keep actions appropriate. You are also encouraged to role-play as much as you feel is appropriate, however there is such a thing as too much. Your Vestments stay the same for this rank (white). Advancement to Exorcist will be considered when you have Submitted Five new original prayers, have 300 Piety Points, 500k Experience Points, Trained to your first star in Unction with Heloise, and referred Two people to become worshippers. Along with these minimum requirements you must show dedication and a desire to succeed in the church, role playing and emotes are noticed and taken into consideration.

EXORCIST - As your rank increases so do your duties and influence in the city. Previous duties are expected to be fulfilled as well as new ones. Your main duty is to seek out new citizens and see if they have an interest in the church as a worshipper or clergy, if they do then refer them to the appropriate clergy that will be able to assist them. By now you should also be reciting prayers during mass. Unction is given to you at this time, train in it when possible. Exorcists are not expected to have 5*'s in unction, however if you wish to do so it is not improper. To be considered for promotion to Acolyte you must have submitted Five new original prayers since promoted to Exorcist, have 600 Piety Points, 500k Experience Points, Trained to your second * in Unction, and referred two new people to be worshippers. As well as showing a desire to go above and beyond the normal call of duty, role playing and emotes are important as well. Honour of the Order de Notre Dame is attained at this rank, however it is not made permanent until you reach the rank of Deacon. Vestments remain the same at this rank (white).

ACOYLTE - Again your duties are the same as before, now they will be added to again, yes there is a pattern here. Confession is attained at this rank, there is no actual skill to learn, but training must be conducted by a senior clergy to show you how to hear a confession. Your main duty now is to hear confessions whenever possible, it is your duty to Shout that you are available to hear confessions when you enter the city. Continue to recite prayers during mass and assist newer clergy with Role-Play Emotes. Begin to seek out possible clergy among the worshippers and answer questions about the clergy way of life. Vestments remain the same(white). Consideration for advancement to Subdeacon will require a minimum submission of 10 new original prayers, a Social Level of 50, 1200 Piety Points, 2 million Experience Points, Trained to your third * in Unction, and referred four new people to be worshippers. Again emotes and role playing as well as a showing of devotion to your duties are important. The noble title of Comte is required for promotion as well.

~THE CLERGY~

SUBDEACON - You are now senior clergy and your duties will increase dramatically at this rank. Your influence within the city is growing and more people will come to you for advice and help, be cautious with whom you help as politics do play a part even in the church. All duties previously performed still hold true, however to a lesser degree, your main duties will be to assist higher-ranking clergy in their duties as needed. Three new powers are granted at this rank, Communion, Baptism, and Marriage. At this rank it is appropriate now for you to shout to announce when mass will be held. Go to the bell ringers' chamber and PULL ROPE 3 times for the 30-minute shout, 2 times for the 15-minute shout, and once for the final five-minute shout. Assist worshippers with directions to the church and direct those wishing for Baptism where to go. You will receive new Vestments when you attain this rank (black). Promotion to Deacon will be considered when you have submitted Three original sermons and five new original prayers. 2000 Piety Points, 4 million Experience Points, Trained to your fourth * in Unction, and Baptised four new worshippers. You must display competence in directing and leading fellow clergy, show the concern and demeanor to comfort when needed, hear confessions regularly, and demonstrate a willingness and ability to assist in the training of other clergy. Available Subdeacon positions within Paris is limited to six.

DEACON - You are now an influential member of the clergy as well as in the city, people come to you with problems and seek advice and you are aware of a great many things happening. Use your influence productively and assist worshippers as well as clergy in all sorts of matters. Low Mass is added to your list of powers, and coordination among those able to hold mass is essential. Make sure to inform them when a mass has been held through a bb post. An additional duty you will now have is to train new clergy, use your experience and information to help them adjust to this new way of life. Instruct them on the basics of the church and begin their training in writing and reciting prayers. Your Honour of the Order de Notre Dame is now permanent, as you have shown your dedication to achieve this rank. Vestments stay the same as for Subdeacon (black). Advancement to Priest will be considered when you have submitted 10 new original sermons, a Social Level of 70, 3000 Piety Points, 5 million Experience Points, Recruited one new Clergy. You must be a Pillar of society, responsible in your fulfillment of duties and Plan and implement one of the following: an event (rp), rework or submit proposal for changing something within the church, or basically add/improve on the church in some way. The current number of available Priest positions is 2, one for Notre Dame and one for Saint Eustache. Promotion to Priest is not easy and only those who display that extra umph! will be able to be promoted. Noble title of Duc is required for promotion. Available Deacon positions within Paris is limited to four.

PRIEST - It has taken a lot to get to this rank and your duties only increase. You are now Rector of your assigned church and leader of the clergy assigned there as well. You report directly to the Archdeacon or next highest rank. Continue to do all you have done before, allowing lower clergy to fulfill their duties as well. It is also your duty to coordinate one of the basic church functions such as Christmas Mass and functions. Hold mass on a regular basis so that you are able to spread the word and serve God. Submit ideas for improvement as well as coordinate all recommendations for promotions on a regular basis to the higher clergy (Archdeacon/Bishop). Ensure that all training needed for clergy is complete and continue to recruit new clergy as well as worshippers. High Mass becomes available, and can be performed if you are assigned to Notre Dame. Promotion to Archdeacon will occur when you have gone above and beyond the minimum requirements such that the Cardinal College takes significant notice. The minimum requirements are 10 million XP, a social level of 85, 10000 Piety Points, and an evident fulfillment of your assigned duties including the regular submission of prayers and sermons. These are the Basic Minimum requirements for promotion, simply meeting them will not guarantee the promotion. Vestments remain the same (black). An added benefit to achieveing this rank is that you will now have the power of Gossiping. (ironic) Available Priest positions in Paris is limited to two.

ARCHDEACON - Years have been well spent by now in the service of the Lord, you are seen as a respected individual in the city and you use your power wisely. You are now listed under Bishops of the Realm and your vestments are Red now. Your role is to ensure that all previously assigned duties are completed as required by lower clergy. Hold mass when appropriate, recruit new clergy as well as worshippers, and ensure the smooth running of the church as a whole. Cooridinate with the Priests and Deacons to ensure that their tasks are being held properly and lend a hand when needed. The rank of Archdeacon is the first in the more administrative roles within the clergy. You are no longer assigned to a specific church, and you superceed the previously held honour of being Rector. It is now within you power to appoint Rectors to the various churches by typing MAKERECTOR (name) when standing inside that church. You may now hold mass, perform weddings, and hear confessions at any church.

Some other aspects that will be taken into consideration for promotion at all ranks will be active within the church and outside of the church in general, holding meaningful jobs. Failure to perform duties on an active basis can result in either the hold of a promotion or demotion, OOC needs will be taken into account and fairness as always will apply.

The Cardinal College, in extraordinary situations, can waive any or all of the listed requirements.

Other Positions
~~l~~

RECTOR - The position of rector is not a rank within the church, it is only visible to others when you type either SCORE or CHURCHES. This position carries no pay, favours, health points or any of the other Job benefits within Paris. It is more a duty of those able to be granted this position to perform it, a Prestige to achieve. There are two Rectors within The Church of France, one for Notre Dame and one for Saint Eustache, and it is traditionally given to someone with the rank of Priest. However, if needed and at the discretion of the Cardinal College this position may be given to anyone they see as worthy. Rectors MUST submit weekly reports in the form of a letter to the Cardinal Bishop to include significant activities that occured related to your church that week. As Priest-Rector, you have the power to Confirm worshippers into the Clergy as well as Defrock a Porter that realizes this is not the life for them. If a worshipper wishes to switch to your church they can type WORSHIP HERE and you will be promted to type OK to agree. You are responsible for the upkeep of both the Rectory as well as the Church, to which you are assigned. To assist you in this task there are two Vergers of the church, again one for each church/rector. Priest-Rectors may also, with the approval of the Cardinal College, ORDAIN clergy that are worthy of promotion.

VERGER - Your main duty is to assist the Rector of the church you are assigned to in any task deemed necessary and befitting your rank within the church. This position is inteded to be held only by the Lower Clergy in Paris, upon attaining the rank of Subdeacon the position will go to another.

Descriptions of Powers
~~l~~

BAPTISING - New citizens (subscribed only), as well as some older, will wish to be free of sin so they may embrace the Lord and join in on Masses, get married, and possibly become clergy. It is the right of all citizens to become worshippers and should be encouraged. Performed by a Subdeacon or higher, this ceremony is a beautiful event that cleans away the sins of the past. To begin the ceremony type BAPTISE (NAME) when at the Rostrum. POWERHELP BAPTISE.

CONFIRMATION - Confirmation is the act of Ordaining a worshipper into the clergy of Paris. It is performed by the Preist-Rector of a church or a clergy member whose rank is Archdeacon or above. One worshipper must be present to perform this and CONFIRM (PERSON) is the command to perform the ceremony. This power will not show up in your list of POWERS, however if you hold the rank of Priest or Position of Priest-Rector you will have it.

COMMUNION - Held during either a low or high mass and performed by Subdeacon or higher rank. Must be performed by a clergy other than the one that initiated the mass. A total of 4 clergy must be present (3 plus yourself) and can begin halfway through the mass. The Clergy that began the mass will get a message to inform them of when communion may be held by another. No one can assist in this rite; it is a solo event and earns 2 piety points for every worshipper that completes the act of communion by drinking thimble and eating bread. The worshipper prior to the end of mass must complete Communion or there are no benefits gained for you or them, timing is essential. BEGIN COMMUNION, GIVE BREAD TO (WORSHIPPER), and GIVE WINE TO (WORSHIPPER) are the commands associated with communion. POWERHELP COMMUNION

LOW MASS - Lasting for 10 minutes and held at either Notre Dame or Saint Eustache, this is beneficial to all who attend, and many worshippers will request a mass. Maximum number of any masses held in one real life week is 2, one per church. Performed by a Deacon or higher, you will need at least one other clergy to BEGIN LOW MASS. Traditionally prayers and sermons are read and if the number of clergy is right Communion may be held. It has also become customary for a Blessing of Unction to be given at the end of mass, this is a great way to fill in for extra time as well. Vestments are required to be worn for Mass, if you are the officiating clergy for the mass make sure all clergy are dressed appropriately. From the time mass had begun until it ends you must remain at the Rostrum, if you leave then Mass will end without benefits and restarting is quite difficult. Piety points are earned for assisting and holding mass and are given at the conclusion of mass and distributed according to rank in descending order. POWERHELP LOW MASS

HIGH MASS - Held in Notre Dame Cathedral only and officiated by a Priest or above, lasting for 15 minutes. This service is reserved for special occasions such as Christmas Mass or Easter Mass and should only be used when appropriate. A total of 4 clergy are needed (3 plus yourself) to BEGIN HIGH MASS. This service lasts an extra 5 minutes longer than a regular low mass so it is advised that you have plenty of material and duties to pass around as well as a Sermon that is time-length appropriate. Again if you leave the Rostrum mass is ended with no benefits and is quite difficult to begin again. Since the number required for high mass is the same as required for Communion, it is commonly held during mass, so long as there is a clergy other than the Officiator present able to begin communion. POWERHELP HIGH MASS

UNCTION - Obtained at Exorcist it is an ability that requires training initially from Heloise, and then further training can be sought out from one who has the skill already or she can continue to train you. Although the Power is achieved at Exorcist it may be trained at any rank. Failure to train can hold up a promotion. It requires Annointing Oil, which can be purchased from A Herbalist's Shop on Rue de Tour. It is your choice to administer this to worshippers or not, and the oils are not cheap, it is your right to ask for compensation from the worshipper when performing Unction. Vials last about one real life week so don't overbuy the oil. ANNOINT (WORSHIPPER) is the command used and must be done on Holy Ground i.e. one of the churches in Paris. The worshipper will receive 5% per *star of the unction the Clergy is trained in. If a worshipper has either shame or penaces to perform then they will not be able to recieve unction. POWERHELP UNCTION

CONFESSION - Helping worshippers relieve themselves of sin is of utmost importance to a member of the Church. The son of our Lord sacrificed himself so we will be able to do this, a gift beyond imagining that must be fulfilled. If asked to hear a confession take it most seriously and at your earliest convenience hear the confession. To do so go to the confessional of the church you are assigned to and go to the Priests stand within the confessional. Once there type ENTER CONFESSIONAL to begin hearing the confession. You will use the SAY command to communicate with the worshipper, once they have confessed all their sins you will end it by typing PENANCES (#). Remember the cost of penances and assign accordingly. Some worshippers may not be assigned to the church you are, you may still hear their confession by typing Transfer <name> to <church name>. POWERHELP CONFESSION

MARRIAGE - Marriage is a sacred bond between two people who have chosen to live the rest of their lives together in a loving union. We as clergy are able to assist worshippers in their wishes to be united in the presence of God. When you attain the rank of Subdeacon this power will be given to you, you will be trained by a higher-ranking clergy in what is acceptable and what is not. We want for each marriage performed to be lasting and never end in Divorce, however, we are realistic and do know that sometimes that does happen. Before we can let this happen though it is our duty to do all we can to assist the couple. This assistance begins before they are even married with pre-marriage counseling, and continues throughout their marriage. It is good from time to time for the clergy who married them to check in on the couple and make sure that all is well for them. When you have made sure the couple has completed the 6-month engagement time period (assuming one or both of them are not under the restraints of a 1 Paris year waiting period for a previous divorce) and at least one counseling session then it is appropriate to perform the ceremony. Please keep in touch with your fellow clergy who are able to perform this service to keep up to date on current situations in Paris that could possibly affect any marriages. When you are ready to perform the ceremony check with the groom to make sure he has the required money on him for the ceremony to begin and type MARRY (MANS NAME) TO (WOMANS NAME). Low Mass during a wedding ceremony is reserved for those nobles of Arch status only. POWERHELP MARRIAGE will be useful in this instance.

Cost is 38livres per application and a vial can hold only 4 applications. Make sure you purchase only 4 at a time or else you are wasting your money.

General Clergy Information
~~l~~

EXCOMMUNICATION - A divorce from the Lord, excommunication has heavy penalties associated with it, so it is recommended that this decision be taken very seriously and after long thought. Readmission into the church will be decided upon by the Cardinal College, it is possible however that this is a permanant banishment.

HELOISE - Soeur Heloise is the tutor for the clergy and can be found inside Notre Dame at the Chamber of the Bell Ringer, an introduction is normally made when you are confirmed. She can train you in any non-attacking skill that is not purchased from L'ecole. In other words she can teach you in Perception, Defensive swordplay, and Riding among others. For these lessons you use the general learn command of LEARN (SKILL) FROM HELOISE. Each lesson with her will cost you 48 livres. To begin learning Unction from her you must type GREET HELOISE, remember that you can train this skill as a Porter or higher.

RECTORY - Both churches have a rectory assigned to them and can be found within one space of the church itself. Traditionally the rectory was the home of only the Priest/Rector of that church, however, it is open to all clergy of that church. Items you do not bring into the rectory itself either belong to another or to the church, please respect the items of others.

NOBLE TITLES - Some ranks within the clergy now require a noble title to accompany them. All clergy are encouraged to increase their noble titles as well as advance within the church. Although it is not seen outright what title a clergy holds, it does help to gain you health and influence within the city. Clergy may hold whatever job they wish other than that of Gendarme as the duties of this job could require combat with a citizen.

PRAYERS/SERMONS - For nearly all ranks within the clergy it is required that you write/submit either Prayers or Sermons. Prayers need not be in direct concert with the theme of a specific mass, they may be general opening prayers or closing for the mass or they may simply be a prayer for those present to pray for the sick or needy. Each prayer must be between 3 and 10 acts/says long with no more than 297 characters per say/act. Sermons determine the basic theme of the Mass. They should be between 10 and 17 says/acts long and relevant to the city of Paris. They can be a loving message or simply educational about the Lord Himself. Even if you write a prayer or sermon and do not perform it during a mass, it will still count towards your requirements if submitted.

***REMEMBER***
As clergy you are ambassadors for God to the rest of the world. Act accordingly and set a positive example for the worshippers in our land.
