Tip:
Be careful challenging players for their jobs without reason
or for strictly greed. You might find them turning around
and challenging you for yours or hindering any application
you apply for.

Definition:
There are a countless ways to make a living for oneself within the city, but this help file details the more official method of employment. There are many different and powerful organisations within the city. The majors ones are, The King's Court, The Queen's Court, the Chatelet, the Hotel de Ville. Each of these institutions employs a great number of people and offersnumerous different jobs. To see what jobs are on offer, type POSITIONS IN (institution) where institution will be COURT, QUEENS, CHATELET or HOTEL. If you type HELP COURT, HOTEL, etc, you will see more detail on each institution. To see futher help on a position or job, type HELP (job name) eg HELP CULTURE MINISTER, for a detailed job description and duties, along with other information.
Applying for a position
Vacancies for positions are announced at the start of each month on the
appointments BB. The VACANCIES command will also list vacant positions
that may or may not be taking applications. If you wish to apply for a
position, type APPLY FOR (name of job). You cannot apply for a position
After the start of the 15th of each month. There may be social level
requirements for any position, and if you do not meet these you will be
prohibited from applying. Each position has set a number of favour levels required which must be expended in order that you might apply (see HELP FAVOURS)
Be aware when applying for a job, you may not be the only applicant. On the 15th of each month, when new applications are stopped, the herald of each
institution will post a list of those applying for positions. You should
RAISE (job) (number of favour levels) - this will hand favours over to
increase your chances. You can also RAISE (friend) (job) (number of favour
levels) to improve the chances of a friend applying for a job. To hinder
someone, you may LOWER (enemy) (job) (favour levels) to lower them. There
is no limit on the amount of favours given in, though as a precaution, you
can only submit a maximum of 30 favour levels at a time.
You may type APPLIED at any time to see those jobs which you have
applied for, and how many favour levels you have used. The applicant with the
MOST favour levels will be appointed.
NOTE: Many positions allow more than one person to occupy them. If this is the
case, and there is more than one remaining available space, then each other
successful applicant will be appointed after the first, in descending order of
how many favour levels they have used in their application.
NOTE: After application for the job, if there is a minimum number of
favourlevels, you MUST RAISE your application by this amount; failure to meet
the job requirements will certainly not result in your success.
You may type VACANCIES to see a list of positions that have openings for one
such as yourself. If this list is too unwieldy, you may additionally supply
an organisation name (eg Hotel de Ville) to list just their vacancies.
If you have certain priviledges you may type APPLICANTS (job) or APPLICANTS
(organisation). The former revealing the applicants for a particular job, and
the latter showing all the applications for all positions under the
organisation named.
Challenging someone already in a position.
In many cases the position you are seeking will already be fulled to capacity,
and there will be no room for you to make an application. In which case you
may choose to CHALLENGE (player) FOR (position). You will then enter a
subsystem, where you will enter a short message detailing why you think you
are more suited for the position than the person you are challenging - and the
letter will be sent to the person in question. You will also be asked how many
favour levels you wish to expend in the challenge. Your competitor will then
have one real week to respond to your challenge, and if he does not submit his
own favours to the sum of half the favour levels you submitted in the
challenge, he or she will be ousted from the position and you will take their
place.
Note: You may only challenge for one position at any one time, and you may not
challenge for a position you are already being challenged for. Also, the
minimum number of favour levels you can make for a challenge is equal to the
number of favour levels that are are required for the position.
Often within a challenge, there will be a constant battle to 'outbid' your
opponent. The challenger is disadvantaged in this because every favour level
the defendant expends is equal to TWO favour levels of the challenger. This is
because the challenger must spend TWICE the number of favour levels of the
defendant in order to assume the position. This is to reflect the fact that
there is a certain respect for someone in office.
To increase the number of favour levels you have spent on a challenge for a
position, type RAISE #favour
levels.
Application (or the given person, if they have applied) additional weight.
LOWER (ply) (position) (#favourlevels)
Expends your favours to lower the
favourlevels
of another applicant. This is the best way of
insuring that if you do not get the job, they
will not either.
APPLIED Shows all positions you are currently
applying for.
CHALLENGE (player) FOR (posn) Challenges another player for a position they
hold.
CHALLENGES Shows all the people you have challenged to a
duel, and also displays any who have
challenged you to a position, and
those you have challenged.
Privileged commands:
APPLICANTS (job)/(organisation) Shows all the applicants for various jobs
VACANCIES [area] Shows positions suitable for you.
APPLY FOR (position) Submits your application for a position and
hands in the number of favour levels
required.
RAISE [(ply)] (position) (#favourlevels)
Adds that number of favorlevels to lend your positions
