Softly rounded side pleats on the skirts of this superb smoke-blue silk coat are quite full and have been interlined so that they hang in heavy folds. The pleats flank the open side seams which extend from hip to hem, and are partially closed by a pair of button stays. The side vents allowing a sword to be worn but preventing it from damaging the coat while the stays prevent the sword from swinging about and control the movement of the skirts. Inside the coat is a tiny label embroidered with an orange blossom, obviously the mark of its designer.
