The Commisisoner for Public safety is responsible for ensuring the safety of the residents of Paris, this is done by ensuring that the criminals are locked safely up in the Bastille, or in corruption cases, that the office holder is dismissed. The Commissioner may file cases against individuals, 'lose' evidence in cases not filed by him originally (so as to ensure the guilty go to prison), and choose the punishment of those found guilty by the court on cases that the Commissioner filed originally. The position lasts for one year; at the first of July, the Commssioner retires. If the Commissioner leaves before this period (resignation, dismissal, or a successful challenge for the position) the incumbent is executed (though with no star loss)

A Judge is a minister for justice, a man who excercises the King's fainess through the laws of the city. It is the responsibilty of a judge to decide whether or not a citizen should be punished for his crimes, and to determine the severity of his or her punishment. A Judge is not all-powerful. In order for a decision to be made, two other Judges must agree with his decision. A Judge will command high respect from his peers.

The Governor of the Bastille is ultimately responsible for all matters surrounding the Prison. The Chief Magistrates are responsible for the eight Magistrates under them. A Magistrate can be thought of as a lesser Judge, their duty is to carry out justice on the more minor and common of offences that occur within Paris. As such, a magistrates have no direct power over prison sentences, but instead can imprison people in stockades as punishment for minor crimes.

A magistrate is responsible for the lesser acts of justice, and deals with minor crimes which are not serious enough to warrant a Bastille sentence or attention by a Judge. A magistrate can place any individual into the stocks at any time, where they will be publically humilated for their crimes. Each admission of such justice will be recorded so that those with a higher authority can ensure the Magistrates are dealing with the individual fairly and properly.
